The White Hand of Isengard, otherwise known as the White Hand or the Hand,[1] was the primary symbol adopted by Saruman, the primary White Wizard, after he became an agent of the Dark Lord. It was used prominently as an emblem by his army of Isengard.[2]

History[]
During the War of the Ring, the White Hand was featured prominently on banners, and used as an intimidating symbol on the helms and faces of the Uruk-hai of Isengard.[2]
In the skirmish at Amon Hen on February 26 of TA 3019, four of the Uruk-hai killed by Boromir possessed black shields bearing the White Hand and iron helms bearing an S-rune. Later, when Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli ("The Three Hunters") discovered these shields and helms, Gimli initially suspected that the S-rune stood for Sauron. After Legolas quickly countered that Elf-runes were not used by the Enemy, Aragorn guessed that the emblem belonged to Saruman instead.[3] While then pursuing Saruman's scouts to save Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took, Aragorn referred to them as the Orcs "of the White Hand of Isengard".[2] During this chase, Uglúk threatened the Moria-orcs in the name of the White Hand of Isengard. Later, the Uruk-hai scouts were met by reinforcements under the command of Mauhúr. These reinforcements bore the White Hand of Isengard.[1] On February 28, Éomer's éored overtook the Uruk-hai of the White Hand close to Fangorn Forest.[2]
On March 5, while on route to the Gate of Isengard, Gandalf, the Three Hunters, Théoden, and the Rohirrim passed a tall black pillar with a great stone which was carved to be a representation of the White Hand.[4]
Upon leaving Isengard, though the company finds the pillar intact, the White Hand stone was broken in many pieces, with one finger ending up on the road with "its red nail darkening to black". Gandalf remarked that the Ents did miss a single detail.[5]
In other versions[]
In an earlier draft, three huge Orcs in the Battle of the Hornburg possess shields bearing the White Hand of Isengard.[6] In another early draft, there was no pillar holding a stone carved to represent the White Hand, instead being large, flat stones.[7]
In adaptations[]
In Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, the mark is created by Saruman's Orcs dipping their hands in white paint-like substance, and, in one instance, applying the war paint on each other's helm. The White Hand of Saruman is well known to their enemies, proven by Éomer's quick recognition of it as of the First Battle of the Fords of Isen.
