Pirates Strike Again: A Dangerous Encounter in the Indian Ocean
In a shocking turn of events, suspected pirates have boarded an oil tanker in the Indian Ocean, sparking concerns and raising questions about maritime security. The Hellas Aphrodite, a product tanker carrying gasoline, was illegally boarded on Thursday morning. According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the vessel's master reported a small craft approaching from its stern, firing small arms and RPGs. Unauthorized individuals from this craft successfully boarded the tanker, creating a tense and dangerous situation.
Latsco Marine Management Inc., the company managing the vessel, has confirmed a security incident southeast of Somalia. The incident took place at approximately 11:48 hours local time on November 6, 2025, while the tanker was en route from Sikka, India, to Durban, South Africa. Notably, this occurred around 550 nautical miles off the Somali coast.
"All 24 crew members are safe and accounted for," Latsco Marine Management assured, adding that they are in close contact with the crew and have activated their emergency response team. The company is working closely with relevant authorities to ensure the crew's continued safety and well-being.
However, due to security concerns, Latsco Marine Management has refrained from providing further details at this time.
The Hellas Aphrodite, a 49,992-dwt product tanker registered in Malta, built in 2016, is now at the center of this piracy incident. Interestingly, this event coincides with a warning issued earlier this week by Ambrey, a maritime risk management firm. Ambrey had cautioned that "It is highly likely that a Somali Pirate Action Group (PAG) is at sea." This group is believed to be operating more than 300 nautical miles offshore Somalia, and there have been reports of exchanges of fire with Private Armed Security Teams (PAST) onboard tankers.
