A bold move for cricket diplomacy! Pakistan's government has taken a decisive step to ensure the safety of the visiting Sri Lankan cricket team, entrusting their security to the Pakistan Army. This decision comes after a series of bomb blasts shook Islamabad, raising concerns for the team's well-being.
But here's where it gets controversial... The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Federal Interior Ministry have joined forces, with Chairman Mohsin Naqvi announcing that the visiting team will now be under the protection of the military and rangers, alongside the police.
Naqvi met with the players at the stadium in Rawalpindi on November 13, 2025, expressing gratitude to the Sri Lankan government and board for their continued support of Pakistani cricket. He revealed that some Sri Lankan players had considered returning home due to security fears post the terror attack.
"It was a delicate balance, but through persistent engagement between our leadership and Sri Lanka's, we achieved a positive outcome," Naqvi stated.
And this is the part most people miss... Army Chief Asim Munir personally assured Sri Lanka's Defence Minister Pramitha Bandara Tennakoon of the team's safety. Munir's involvement was a key factor in convincing the players to stay.
"The Field Marshal's assurance was a game-changer. I'm thankful the players showed courage in deciding to remain," Naqvi added.
Naqvi himself held an extensive meeting with the Sri Lankan players, reassuring them that their safety was Pakistan's top priority. He acknowledged their concerns and highlighted the role of Sri Lanka's President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in convincing the team.
In a similar situation, New Zealand's team abandoned their tour of Pakistan in 2021 due to security threats. However, Pakistan is determined to showcase its commitment to cricket and international relations.
So, what do you think? Is this a wise move by Pakistan to boost its image and promote cricket diplomacy? Or does it raise more questions about security and the role of the military in such situations? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
