Mississippi Homeowner Fatally Shoots Escaped Monkey After Truck Crash (2025)

A Mississippi homeowner faced a split-second decision that led to a tragic outcome: the shooting of an escaped monkey. On October 28th, a truck carrying Rhesus monkeys overturned, leading to a daring escape. The incident quickly escalated when one of the escaped primates was fatally shot. But why did this happen?

Jessica Bond Ferguson, a mother of five, was awakened early Sunday morning by her son, who reported seeing a monkey near their home in Heidelberg, Mississippi. Grabbing her firearm and phone, she went outside and spotted the monkey approximately 60 feet (18 meters) away.

Bond's decision was influenced by warnings that the monkeys might carry diseases. She stated, "I did what any other mother would do to protect her children." She fired her gun, and after a second shot, the monkey fell.

The Jasper County Sheriff's Office confirmed the incident on social media, stating that they had taken possession of the monkey. The monkeys were from the Tulane University National Biomedical Research Center in New Orleans, Louisiana, which supplies primates for scientific research. However, Tulane University clarified that the monkeys were not theirs and were not being transported by them.

Initially, the Sheriff’s office reported that the monkeys could be carrying diseases, including herpes. However, Tulane University stated that the monkeys "have not been exposed to any infectious agent". The situation was further complicated when, after initially reporting that all but one monkey had been killed, the Sheriff's office announced that three monkeys were still at large and being searched for.

This story raises several questions. Was the homeowner's reaction justified, considering the potential health risks? Or was it an overreaction? What should be done when potentially dangerous animals escape? Share your thoughts in the comments.
