Waffle recipe ingredients

  • All purpose flour – Make sure you’re not using self rising flour or cake flour as those types of flour have additional ingredients for leavening.
  • White sugar – You can technically skip the sugar, but I like my pancakes a little sweet, and the sugar helps the outer part of the waffle carmelize a bit and get that delicious crispy outer texture.
  • Baking powder – Baking powder is used for leavening to make these super fluffy and delicious.
  • Baking soda – Baking soda is also a leavening agent!
  • Salt – A little bit of salt goes a long way to heighten flavor profiles.
  • Milk – I like to use whole milk for this recipe, but lowfat or skim milk will also work.
  • Egg – Our recipes always call for large eggs. Medium or extra large can be used if that’s all you have on hand.
  • Vegetable oil – I like to use mild olive oil, but regular vegetable oil like canola works great too.
  • Pan spray – Our three ingredient pan release is definitely the best ever! Brush it on before pouring the batter into your waffle iron for a crispy finish and easy release.

Homemade waffle toppings

  • Whipped butter – Fluffy whipped butter not only tastes great, but it stretches your butter budget! Add delicious flavorings like cinnamon, honey, maple syrup, or nutmeg!
  • Cinnamon apple butter – Make it in the slow cooker, on the stove top, or in the instant pot. I don’t care how, but definitely make it! Yum!
  • Pumpkin spice syrup – Winter, spring, summer, or fall; these are all times during which it is appropriate to serve pumpkin spice. Our simple syrup tastes great on everything from waffles to coffee.

My kids think I’m weird, but I love a fresh waffle smothered in just whipped butter!

How do you make homemade waffles? (Step-by-step)

First, in a large mixing bowl combine dry ingredients and mix well.

Next, in a separate bow, whisk together wet ingredients.

Then, pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and mix together just until a batter forms. If you find the batter is too thick, add additional milk in small amounts.

Finally, use a small ladle or measuring cup to pour batter onto a greased waffle iron. Cook until both sides are golden brown.

Preparation

Can you make waffle recipe batter ahead of time?

You can prepare the batter for your waffle recipe up to a day in advance. Keep it in the refrigerator in a covered pitcher or sealed bag. When you are ready to prepare the waffles, give the batter a gentle stir and add a little bit of milk or water if needed.

Can you freeze waffle batter?

If you find you made too much batter or just want to have some ready in the freezer for busy mornings, you can freeze it for up to a few months. To defrost, place in the refrigerator overnight, or for quicker defrosting, place the container in warm water, changing frequently until batter is thawed completely.

How long do you cook waffles in the waffle maker?

This will depend largely on your waffle maker and also how well done you like your waffles, but as a general rule they will take about 3 – 5 minutes to cook.

If you’re using a Belgium waffle maker they will take a bit longer, and a traditional waffle maker will be a bit faster.

My favorite part about Belgium waffles is how they collect syrup and butter in the recesses.

Leftovers and storage

How long are waffles good for?

Waffles will last in the refrigerator for about three days. For best results, allow the waffles to cool before storing and keep them in an airtight container.

Can you freeze waffles?

You can freeze prepared waffles for as long as six months. Like with refrigeration, make sure the waffles have cooled to room temperature before storing them in an airtight container. Too keep them from sticking to each other, place a piece of freezer paper or parchment paper between the waffles.

Thaw overnight in the refrigerator or directly in the toaster or microwave when ready to eat.

How do you reheat waffles?

My favorite way to reheat this waffle recipe is in the toaster or toaster oven. The edges crisp back up beautifully and they’re nearly as good as fresh made! If you’re in a rush though, 30 – 60 seconds in the microwave will do the trick too.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between waffles and Belgian waffles?

Belgian waffles are typically much bigger (and thicker) than traditional waffles. They are made in a waffle iron that creates extra-large and deep square pockets, perfect for filling with syrup and butter!

Is waffle recipe mix the same as pancake mix?

You can make waffles with pancake mix, but often waffle recipes will contain more fat and sugar to help give that crisp outer shell that we all love. You can also achieve a great caramelization by using our super amazing pan release recipe before pouring the batter into your iron.

Tools we love

  • Belgium waffle maker – This electric waffle maker makes four gorgeous perfect fluffy waffles.
  • Oil mister– This is the perfect gift for folks who want to make sure they know exactly what they’re spraying on their pans. We like to put olive oil in ours, but you could use anything from vegetable oil, grapeseed oil, avocado oil, or whatever you like! Just pump the top a few times and it sprays a fine mist of the oil you chose.
