Mrs. Heidi Horten wearing a necklace comprising a rectangular-shaped emerald of 68.13 carats, pear brilliant-cut diamonds ranging from 2.59 to 1.01 carats, pear-shaped and round diamonds, build in platinum and 18k yellow gold.
The fine muzo emerald was bought by Harry Winston in 1959, together with 16 emeralds weighing a total of 256,30ct from the Maharaja of Nawanagar.
The collection included several stones with an intersting pedigree and became what Mr. Winston felt was one of the greatest disappointments in his career. The largest stone in the collection, a superb one weighed 68,12 carats. It had once belonged to the last sultan of the Ottoman Empire, Abdul Hamid II. whose collection of gemstones was rivaled by few. After Hamid's abdication in 1909, an auction of his collection was held in Paris, as sale that literally flooded Europe with superb gemstones of all description.
Cartier purchaseed a number of the stones including the aforementioned. They sold a collection of emeralds to Princess Anastasia of Greece (formerly Mrs. Nancy Leeds, widow of American tin magnate William Leeds)
After Princess Anastasia of Greece death in 1926, the stones were repurchased by Cartier.
Six of the largest, weighing a total of 224.08, were used to form part of an emerald and diamond necklace that was sold to the Maharaja of Nawanagar; these emeralds were among the 17 that Mr. Winston purchased from the maharaja in 1959, the two largest stones weighing 69.15carats - later recut to 68.12carats and 50.50 carats later recut to 49,68carats.
With the collection, one necklace was designed from which a necklace as well as three clips and a pair of earrings could be created.
The price in 1960 was one and a half million dollars.
Although several clients expressed interest in the piece, only one South American seriously negotiated for it.
After much discussion, the man felt that he would rather place the money in something that was a sure inverstment! - By 1972 the value of the largest stone alone was greater than the original asking price of the entire necklace.
Eventually the 68.12carat emerald was sold to a European connoisseur, mounted in the necklace. The 49.68carat gem was sold as a pendant to a diamond necklace.
Mr Winston often spoke regretfully of the original client who turned down this fabulous offer.
It was made by Harry Winston, in his typical "Harry Winston Style" with Glitz, Glam, and Gorgeous Rocks his first publishing about the outstanding emerald necklace in this version was in the year 1966.
Mr Horten bought the amazing emerald collier, for his wife Heidi Horten.
After her death in the year 2022, it will offered now on auction, at Christies, Geneva in May 2023.
