This will allow this deliciousglaze to get down into the ham.

Brown Sugar Ham Recipe Tips and Notes

  • Cooking Time for Ham:A smoked ham is a fully cooked ham and just needs to be heated through. Figure about 10 minutes per pound at 325°. You can wrap in foil to keep it moist. Glazing the ham will also help to retain moisture. A digital meat thermometer is a must-have to cook the perfect ham. If you enjoy the crispy edges from the sticky brown sugar glaze, you can skip the foil.
  • Best Temperature to Oven Bake Ham:Since spiral sliced hams come fully cooked, it’s best to bake at 325° to keep it from drying out.
  • How Much Ham Should I Buy?With a bone-in, spiral cut ham you can figure about 3/4 pound per person. A Petit Jean Half Ham will feed about 10 people.
  • Leftovers:Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 3 days. Use a vacuum sealer and store up to 7 days in the refrigerator or up to 3 months in the freezer.
  • Reheat:Reheat ham slices in a skillet, lightly covered with olive oil, over medium heat. Turn after a few minutes to heat from both sides.

    FAQs

Do you cook a glazed ham covered or uncovered? ›

Cover with foil. Bake 2 to 2½ hours or until browned and heated through (140°F). For the last 45 minutes of cooking, uncover and spoon glaze over ham (if you're using a glaze). Transfer to a platter using two large, wide spatulas.

Should I cover a baked ham in the oven? ›

    Not Covering Your Ham

If you don't cover your ham while cooking it will quickly dry out. Instead: Put some aluminum foil over your ham while it's cooking. It is recommended that the ham is covered for at least half of the cooking process and only removed during the last half when you glaze it.

Is it best to glaze ham during cooking or at the end? ›

The glaze should not be applied until the final hour to 30 minutes, in order to avoid burning the sugars. What you're going to do with the glaze ingredients is just combine most of them into a paste, and then apply it to the ham. After that, the heat in your oven will take care of everything.

Do you cook a ham face down or on its side? ›

Place ham, flat side down, on rack in shallow roasting pan; cover tightly with aluminum foil. Bake approximately 13 to 18 minutes per pound until heated through. Remove ham from oven. Glaze as directed below or let stand, covered, 10 minutes before serving.

What happens if you don't cover ham with foil? ›

Ham is best reheated low and slow, and heating it uncovered means that the moisture in the ham evaporates, leaving it dry and unappetizing. → Follow this tip: Place the ham cut-side down in a baking pan. Cover the ham with foil or use a baking bag to heat up the ham until it's time to glaze.

How do you keep ham from drying out in the oven? ›

Baste with broth or stock: One way to add moisture to a dried out ham is to baste it with a flavorful liquid such as broth or stock. Use a brush or spoon to apply the liquid over the ham periodically during cooking, or place the ham in a roasting pan with a layer of broth or stock at the bottom of the pan.

Do you cook a ham at 325 or 350? ›

    Cooking Temperature and Time

If the ham is a half ham weighing five to seven pounds, it should heat at 325°F for 22-25 minutes per pound. If it is a whole ham weighing between 10 to 14 pounds, heat the ham at 325°F for 18-20 minutes per pound. The internal temperature should be 140°F.

Should you rinse ham before cooking? ›

Sometimes consumers rinse or soak country ham, bacon or salt pork because they think it reduces the sodium or salt enough to allow these products to be eaten on a sodium-restricted diet. However, very little salt is removed by washing, rinsing or soaking a meat product and doing so is not recommended.

Do you put water in bottom of roasting pan for ham? ›

Place ham in a large roasting pan; press cloves into the top at 1- to 2-inch intervals. Pack the top with a layer of brown sugar. Pour enough water into the bottom of the roasting pan to come to a 1-inch depth; cover the pan tightly with aluminum foil.

Can you overcook a glazed ham? ›

Can you overcook a glazed ham? Yes, you can. Overcooked ham can become dry. Cook the ham for 1 hour at 200ºC or until warmed through, basting it every 15 minutes.

How do you heat a precooked ham and keep it moist? ›

The goal is to reheat the ham without drying it out. The best way to do this is to place the ham on a rack in a roasting pan. Add water to the bottom of the pan and cover the whole thing tightly with foil. Bake at 325F for 16-20 minutes per pound, until a meat thermometer registers 135F.

How do you cook a precooked ham without drying it out? ›

Reheating ham via skillet is an easy way to get a few slices nice and hot in a flash. To reheat ham slices on the stove, add a few slices at a time to a skillet over medium-high heat. Add up to ½ cup of chicken broth to keep the meat moist or opt for a couple of tablespoons of butter or oil to give the ham a nice sear.

Do you add liquid when cooking a ham? ›

Cook to 163 degrees internal temperature (or about 25 minutes per pound). Add water to keep ham covered. Take ham from the pan and while warm, remove the skin and fat as desired.

Which side of ham goes down? ›

Let it sit before baking: Let the ham come to room temperature before cooking to ensure juicer, more evenly cooked meat. Cook it cut-side down: Place the ham cut-side down in your pan to prevent it from drying out while baking.
